The Arkansas River In Colorado cascades through towering Rocky Mountain whitewater gorges and scenic tree lined valleys. The Arkansas River Valley is an historic route of exploration and transportation in the wild Southern Rockies. The river runs through Precambrian rock dated to 1.7 billion years of age. Many small springs are encountered in the area, and hot water rising along the graben fault zone feeds hot pools and tubs in the Nathrop/Buena Vista area. The water is usually clear and cold with uniformly swift current, and spiced with some very serious recreational whitewater. The river harbors a healthy population of native and stocked trout. The overall surroundings are awesomely beautiful, in the shadow of 14,000 foot peaks.
A river run may be wild or mild and last a matter of hours or a matter of weeks. For Far Flung Adventures guides and guests, the very best trip offers a lingering acquaintance with a wild river: its wildlife and fish, its most primitive landscapes and secret places, the voice of the river at home in its watershed and the planetary processes the river reveals: water responding to gravity and the shape of land. This process takes an investment of time, but the rewards are great: a chance to shed the accumulated baggage of our "civilized lives", to be surprised by what happens next, to connect with nature, in and outside of one's self.
