Wild Taos Box Overnight  Whitewater Wilderness Two-Day River Trips

America’s original Wild and Scenic River, New Mexico’s Rio Grande hurtles through a 50-mile gorge that is really a rift in an ancient lava flow.  Our Wild River Two-Day begins near Questa, New Mexico, at the Rio Grande Gorge Wild River Recreation Area, and ends south of Taos near the village of Pilar, at the Taos Junction Bridge, and traverses 27 miles of rugged canyons and Class 3-4 rapids.

DATES:  Late April - Early July. This wild, remote New Mexico river trip is available throughout the season.

PARTICIPANTS:  We welcome beginning rafters twelve years of age and older.  You should be in normal good health and prepared for the moderate exertion of the trail.  Guides will do the navigating in oar-powered rafts, or paddle rafts for the more energetic groups of 4-6 people.

COSTS:  $340 per person plus New Mexico sales tax, with a 50% advance deposit required.  Group discounts are available for 12+.  Add New Mexico sales tax.

SAMPLE ITINERARY: Our first day begins with a one mile hike to the river down a steep, but well-maintained trail at Arsenic Springs.  We raft from the foot of Class 6 Little Arsenic Springs rapid through the long, bouldery La Junta Rapid.  Keep a  look-out for hawks and eagles along this less-traveled stretch of river.

On the second day, we cover 15 miles and fifteen named rapids.  Beginning at the precipitous Powerline Falls, we descend at an average gradient of 55 feet per mile through drops with names like Rockgarden, Screaming Left Hand Turn, Enema, and finishing with Sunset where your run is captured by a photographer. You’ll rejoin your vehicles between 3-4:00 P.M.

Our Meeting Place And Time: Meet us at 9:00 A.M. at the Far Flung Adventures Boathouse. Head North from Taos on Highway 64 to the stop light. Go North through the intersection on 522 approximately 1/4 mile and look for the Far Flung sign on your right.

FAR FLUNG ADVENTURES PROVIDES:Certified river guides, self-bailing rafts, four meals and meal service items, wet suits, river-safety equipment, waterproof duffel for your personal gear, camera/binocular protection (however, the inexpensive disposable waterproof cameras are highly recommended), tents, portable toilets, and shuttle transportation to and from the river and our Taos meeting place. Your guides have many years experience on the Rio Grande, are trained in river rescue and wilderness emergency first aid, and are certified by the New Mexico River Outfitter’s Association. YOU NEED TO BRING: Participants should provide their own sleeping gear (rental sleepkits available @$10 per night), and personal clothing, raingear (rentals available @$5 per day), a canteen.  Footgear should include sneakers (no slippery bottoms, please) and wool socks for on river wear, and sturdy hiking boots or sneakers for camp, nature walks, and the hikes into and out of the canyon.

RESERVATIONS: A 50% per person deposit is required.
